Inspired by tradition crafted for life
Mati Ventrillon is a Venezuelan who lives in Fair Isle, Scotland. She produces bespoke Fair Isle Knitwear, drawing from local cultural heritage. Her strapline, ‘Inspired by tradition, crafted for life’ serves as the foundation for everything she does.
Our goal was to celebrate the tradition of the craft, whilst aligning it to the modern fashion world. Our considerations included bestowing the brand with a personable feel, showcasing the purity of the garments and celebrating Fair Isle’s remote and rugged landscape.
Working closely with Mati, we built the brand identity, verbal identity and over the years, implemented the brand as it has grown in both size and retail environments.

Sometimes the logo presents itself. We crafted Mati’s signature for the logo. The brand symbol that we created is a stylised version of a local Woollie Horse, a traditional jumper stretcher. This sets up a direct association with the localised, although now worldwide, industry.
Mati is one of a handful of people from the Fair Isle that still makes jumpers following the original traditional methods.
Dylan Thomas was commissioned for the photoshoot, celebrating Fair Isle’s unique, remote and idyllic landscape. By also integrating the ‘hero’ products and the Woollie Horse, the photography reinforces the new identity.
The result is a brand visual language that celebrates the unique gift of this remote island and Mati's distinctive approach to reviving this traditional craft for the world.
Their understanding of my ideas and their capacity to think out of the box was exactly what I needed. Their professional yet friendly approach made the whole design process an enjoyable one; they were not only doing a job, they were building up a relationship.
