D&AD 3D Zoetrope
As part of our creative for the 51st D&AD awards we created a 3 meter high 3D zoetrope – showcasing some of the best black pencil awards winning campaigns / products / designs (basically the D&AD black pencil is one of the best accolades a creative can achieve).
Working to an extremely tight deadline and delivering with moments to spare this become a centre piece for the 51st D&AD awards ceremony night. This 5 tiered zoetrope works on the same principle as the original moving animations, by taking 16 static 3D objects rotating them on a central column and then lighting with a 16 beat strobe to create the optical illusion of a animation.
The concept started with Wieden+Kennedys ‘I Wish I’d Done That’ concept, which Factory Fifteen created a digital animated stings for the call for entries, where each category is represented within hidden animated worlds inside the D&AD yellow pencil (See link below for a more in-depth story). We then created an analogue 3D zoetrope pencil with amazing collaboration from Ed Smith at Mayk collective.
Its taken a while to catalogue this project, so we thought it best to post before the next award ceremony comes around at the end of this week!
